Pilates x Menopause
Menopause is a transformative stage in a woman's life, often accompanied by physical and emotional challenges. Pilates, especially 1:1 Reformer and Mix apparatus sessions, can be a powerful tool to support women in the Margate community during this time.
1 Bone Health - Pilates helps improve bone density, reducing the risk of osteoporosis. Weight-bearing and resistance exercises in Pilates stimulate bone growth and strengthen bones, which is crucial as estrogen levels drop during menopause.
2 Muscle Strength and Flexibility - Pilates enhances muscle strength and flexibility, counteracting muscle loss and joint stiffness often experienced during menopause. This improvement in physical function supports joint health and overall mobility in the menopause.
3 Core Stability and Pelvic Health - Strengthening core muscles through Pilates improves posture, supports the spine, and reduces back pain. It also engages pelvic floor muscles, helping to address urinary incontinence issues some women experience.
4 Mental Well-being and Stress Reduction - Pilates reduces stress and enhances mood by releasing endorphins to balance moods. The mind-body connection emphasised in Pilates promotes relaxation, focus, and improved cognitive abilities helping to elevate the brain fog and give more clarity.
5 Feeling in Your Body - Pilates will help to centre you and support connecting you to your body as many women feel disconnected during the perimenopause/ Menopause. Mindful movements that allow you to focus inward. Helping to elevate symptoms like hot flashes.
Marie Claire - Wrist Weights
Joseph Pilates incorporated hand weights into his original Pilates system, emphasising their use in a sequence called the standing arm series. This approach aimed to enhance strength, posture, and mobility rather than to build muscle mass.
The weights served to deepen the engagement of muscles during exercises, historical references indicate that even Pilates used weight on the feet to help connect the feet to the centre in mat work, showcasing the longstanding tradition of integrating light weights into Pilates routines. The introduction of wrist and ankle weights is more of an evolution.
James Shaw x Women’s Health - Tower Pilates
Full disclosure: as much as I enjoy it, my enthusiasm to exercise waxes and wanes. There will be days when I’ll sack off the gym in favour of a lie-in, but if there’s one workout I always look forward to, it’s Pilates. I’ve been a reformer Pilates stan since 2020 and mat Pilates is a regular in my routine, so when I saw the likes of Maya Jama and Rochelle Humes trying tower Pilates, I was keen to find out more. But how does it compare? With reformer Pilates reaching peak popularity, could tower Pilates take over? Here’s all you need to know, from Third Space's Master Pilates Trainer James Shaw.
Pilates: Classical Reformer Workshop
Classical Reformer Workshop, designed specifically for dynamic and contemporary Reformer teachers who want to deepen their understanding of the original Reformer Pilates method. This immersive experience will take you back to the original Joseph Pilates' work, providing invaluable insights that will enhance your teaching practice.
Classical Reformer Pilates
Bringing Classical Reformer Pilates to Margate has been my dream. The Reformer is a cornerstone of Joseph Pilates' method, offers a unique and powerful approach to full-body conditioning. Classical Reformer Pilates adheres closely to Joe's original sequence and principles, providing a structured and purposeful workout that has stood the test of time.

“Reformer was never meant to be a solo piece of equipment used in traditional Pilates, and neither is the Tower,” says James Shaw, Pilates master trainer at Third Space. “Mastering the full method involves working across all the Pilates equipment, such as the Cadillac, mat, wunder chair, ladder barrel, tower, and spine corrector. Each of these apparatus helps you to progress and improve the different areas of your Pilates practice, whether you need help with strength or flexibility.”
